Notes for Florence Amelia Rathbun
Flossie was a member of the Beacon Valley Grange and of the Congregational Church. Her grandchildren were told the story that she was “born at sea, on a ship flying the flag of England and captained by her father. The ship docked in Italy so the baby was given duel Italian/American citizenship.” Flossie was an artist who painted in oils on canvas and she painted flowers on dishes. She signed her canvases“FAR.” She was also musically talented, played the piano and was said to have had a beautiful singing voice. Her piano was inherited by her eldest daughter Nellie who played for her daughters while their father kept time with wooden spoons on the table top. Flossie died at age 23 from complications of childbirth, eighteen days after giving birth to her daughter Faith.
