Family tradition had it that Alta was the daughter of a man named Hotchkiss who’s wife’s sister had lost several babies. The Hotchkiss family was large and when Alta was born she was given to her mother’s sister to be raised as a Porter.
The Hotchkiss Family Association had it (from the records of Jerome A. Downs, Jr.) that Sarah Elizabeth Hotchkiss went to live with her Aunt Sarah (Hubbard) Porter and changed her name to Alta to avoid confusion.
“Nonnie” as she was later known, went on to raise her grandchildren Nellie, Joe and Faith after their mother Flossie died in 1894. Later still, she raised the son of her son-in-law Richard Bachelor’s first marriage.

She was elected President of the New Haven County Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) December 4, 1907 -- see newsclipping from Journal Courier
