Notes for Jerome Andrew Downs Jr.
Jerome Jr. was First Selectman of Bethany from 1903-1908 and represented the town in the Connecticut legislature in 1905. He had “been a member of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry for twelve years, and Master of the Beacon Valley Grange, No. 103, for four years. He was a member of the Governor’s Guard for twelve years and was on the Major’s Staff for six years with the rank of Lieutenant. He is a charter member of Croswell Lodge, No. 39, of the I.O.O.F., of New Haven, and has been a member of the Young Men’s Republican Club for sixteen years.” His grandchildren referred to him as “Grampa Roamie” and his second wife as “Grandma Jossie.” In his later years Jerome suffered from arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair. On his doctor’s advice he took up knitting and sewing to keep his fingers nimble. In 1926 he made a beautiful bed quilt as a wedding present for his granddaughter Dorothy.
