Notes for Audrey Ann Goodpasture
AUDREY ANN COLE The first child of Virgil and Eva Goodpasture, Audrey was born in Paducah, KY, on January 9, 1935. Seeking more gainful employment, Virgil moved his family to Pasadena, CA, where he worked building sets for Warner Brothers Studios. From there they skipped to Monterey Park, Daly City, Portland, OR, then back to California in Monrovia, Arcadia, and Burbank, leaving a trail of homes con-
structed or refurbished by Virgil. Eventually they would land at Donner Lake, where Audrey attended Tahoe Truckee High School and developed an affinity for music, studying voice and piano, a passion that would stay with her for life. Here Audrey soon caught the interest of Chico na- tive John Cole, a border inspector with the California Department of Agriculture stationed in Truckee. They were married in Reno on September 3rd, 1955, and together attended California State University Sacramento, where they obtained teaching creden- tials. After graduation, they moved to Marysville and taught elementary school, Audrey in Olivehurst, and John in Oroville. In March, 1958, the family grew with the arrival of Meggie, followed by Jeannie in 1960, and David in 1961. In 1965 they relocated to Chico, in a house on Vallombrosa Avenue, where John and Audrey spent the majority of their lives. Audrey cherished the home, its generously treed yard, and the serene view of Bidwell Park across the street. They attend- ed Chico First Church of the Nazarene for more than four decades, where Audrey enjoyed playing the piano for her Sunday School, and spent many years as the choir director. Namesake of Audrey's beloved father, Virgil joined the clan in 1968, with Eddie, the fifth and final addition, arriving in 1970. A hallmark of Audrey's life was her love of motherhood, and she often vocalized the joy she took in her children. After John's death in 2009, Audrey went to live with her daughter Jeannie, who served as her mother's care-giver for many years. In the early hours of May 4, 2022, on a beautiful San Diego morning, Audrey passed from complica- tions due to congestive heart failure. Mom read her Bible every day, and found in its pages the hope she clung to over the course of her life, entering at last into the eternal rest of which she so frequently spoke. She is survived by her sisters Adonna and Shirley, her 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. A memorial service with reception will be held at Hope Commons Church (formerly Chico First Church of the Nazarene), 1184 East Ave, on Saturday, August
27th, at 11 AM.
