Although earlier houses may have been built on or near this property, this well-preserved house
achieved its form and orientation in the Greek Revival period and is also historically important as one of the few houses in Woodbridge directly associated with Irish immigrants. A definitive search of the land and tax records carried out in 1988 confirms the architectural analysis. The original property, developed by Silas Bradley after 1795, was sold to Charles Sperry (1782-1856) in 1812, shortly after his marriage to Silas’s niece, Huldah Bradley. This house had been built by 1834, when Sperry was taxed for two dwellings. After his death, the Sperry Farm was sold by Charles and Huldah’s eldest son, John, to Edward Welch (1819-1876). Edward and his wife Hannah Haffey (1830-1888) were both born in Ireland, and they had four children. Welch, who was also prosperous enough to employ two Irish farm laborers by 1870, raised beef cattle, as Sperry had done earlier, and added to his acreage. His fortunes rapidly reversed, however, starting in 1872 when he had to mortgage part of the property to James A. Darling and the remainder to William Hotchkiss in 1875. Welch died insolvent and after a forced sale, the property was quitclaimed to Hotchkiss. In the early twentieth century the farm was broken up and this house then passed through several hands.
